- Canvas Prep SUGGESTED: Consider bringing a canvas that you have prepped at home following these instructions as seen on YouTube… https://youtu.be/oFAyzbb_H8s (Advance to about 15 minutes then watch through about 25 minutes into the video.)
- OR, if you would rather just read…
The concept is to scrub your gesso onto the canvas, applying a very thin coat. Use a stiff brush that scrubs well. Don’t ruin a good brush. Dip into the gesso, just the bottom 1/3rd of the bristles, not near the ferrule. Scrub like you are dry brushing. As you scrub, you will fill in the areas that would later cause white specks in your painting. Experts say two to three coats, but Martha’s been quite pleased with one coat thinly scrubbed in. Strokes don’t get into the fibers of the canvas, where scrubbing does. Drying is very fast, because of the thin coat. Canvasses like The Edge or Fredericks don’t need it, but craft store bargain canvasses, although factory gessoed, really need it. - OR, if you are short on time… Gesso will be available at the meeting and you will have time to do it there. It’s fast and dries fast.
